Eating Well in Chilliwack

I’ve lived here for five years and I continue to be surprised at all the local offerings of Chilliwack, and at how new quality businesses keep opening up in this city nestled in between the mountains. Every few months, there seems to be a new round of openings and these past few months, even in the face of a pandemic, that trend has continued.

If you live in British Columbia, add the city of Chilliwack to your next local travel destination (and for those international travellers, add it for the future!) if you like outdoor activities with a side of good food. This area boasts truly epic hikes (which I will write about in my next post) and is consistently building up a solid roster of places to eat.

Herewith my top suggestions for dining in Chilliwack:

Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen. This place is a vibe. The outside isn’t anything special as it sits on the main road but it’s nice to be outdoors so we normally go that route. The inside is adorable – think pink accent wall and a trendy tropical atmosphere – as if you’re in Mexico (which is especially welcome during this no travel era!). All of the food is pretty tasty but my favourites are the Beef Barbacoa tacos and the Churro Bowl for dessert. The pricing is also totally reasonable, and they usually have a good play list going.

Social Distancing in Okanagan British Columbia

Ways to seize the day in the “new normal”

Many of us are looking for responsible ways to enjoy ourselves outside of our homes lately, and lucky for me, I ended up at a pretty special place last week that delivers on just that. Little Engine Wines in Naramata, BC is open for business and they are crushing the social distancing activity category.

For starters, they have a beautiful outdoor space, with green grass looking out into the vineyards and Okanagan Lake, and some comfy patio furniture providing just enough shade. They also have multiple sitting areas on both sides of the building so parties can effectively spread out.

Shortly after we arrived, our table was set with 6 wine glasses per person lined up in rows, and then each wine was poured. Once ready, instead of a staff member taking us through each wine over the course of the hour, we were instructed to type in a specific URL and up popped our selection of wines with accompanying descriptions. Not only was this helpful in terms of social distancing from the staff but it also allowed us flexibility in our flow which was especially helpful since we showed up with 5 kids (cue sprawling green grass fields!)

This large sprawling piece of grass was helpful with the kids!

Not only were the social distancing protocols effective and non intrusive but the wines themselves were fantastic. A personal favourite was the white Unity, but all 6 were nice. A definite recommendation for something fun that you and your friends, partner or family can do this summer!

In addition to the winery, I also recommend boating (Okanagan Lake is truly stunning), and golfing. Stay tuned for more fun social distancing activity recommendations for this summer!
