Fly Fishing on the Pitt River with BC Fly Fishing Charters

Have you fished the Pitt River yet? Okay, but have you gone fly fishing on the Pitt River? Well, it’s time to write it down on your “must fish” list.

Recently, Kevin and I made it out of the house without the kids (thank you to our neighbour for coming over so early to watch the kids!), and spent a day on the Pitt River. Curtis, owner and operator of BC Fly Fishing Charters, and overall connoisseur of the Pitt, took us out for the day and we are so grateful he did!

The Pitt is an absolutely gorgeous body of water in the Fraser Valley. The water is aqua blue, really fast in most areas, and there is a ton of rocky shore to play with. Part of the fun of going fishing with Curtis is watching him navigate the river with his boat. It's the kind of place that demands experience and focus and Curtis is absolutely the guy you want in the boat for this area.

We fished for bull trout. I didn’t catch any this day but Kev caught a few, and it was so fun to watch. Lots of suspense! Another big part of the fun is wading in the water. Staying balanced in the fast water is a total workout, and being IN the water is meditative. All your senses are activated as you listen to the water rushing by, feel the cold on your body and smell the fresh air.

Kev caught a few this day and it was a real treat watching the line go buzzing as the fish took hold.

No matter what kind of fishing you're doing, I find good storytelling is always in abundance. There was no shortage of stories between the three of us that day.

As the day was ending, I laid on the rocky shore and let the sun hit my face, and took in the peaceful setting.

Fishing the Pitt River? Here are four tips to take with you:

  • Get a GOOD fishing guide - like Curtis. Winding rocky rivers need experienced boat drivers and guides who know the sweet spots for all the fish you want to catch.

  • Good fly and river fishing gear is essential. Don’t waste your time fighting your gear, make sure you are comfortable before hand. There is nothing worse than being uncomfortable while you are trying to find your zen fishing.

  • Layers are so key. No matter the time of year, this glacier fed water is super cold. So layer up ! Even during the summer…and if you get wet, you’re not stuck waiting for your clothes to dry

  • Have some good stories in your back pocket. Everyone loves hearing a good story!
