Family Friendly Hike in Whistler
While Whistler is known for its snow sports in the winter and golf and mountain biking in the summer, there are more and more shoulder season activities becoming available or more well known. Hiking is one of them and just like the other physical activities Whistler offers, they’ve got every skill level available.
Train Wreck Hike in Whistler
Recently, the kids and I spent a weekend in Whistler and got into a super family friendly hike called the Train Wreck Hike. The name is exactly what it is, in 1956, a train derailed and the empty box cars have been there, lying in the forest ever since. The Train Wreck Hike is a pretty hike. It includes a quintessentially west coast suspension bridge, waterfalls, and the pièce de resistance - the old trains you can take pics with, climb on top of, and explore inside. For a kid, it doesn’t get much better than actually being encouraged to climb and duck and hide on a big piece of machinery!
Family Friendly Activity
There are seven trains in total, and they are all beautifully and boldly coloured with bright graffiti. The terrain is ok for beginners and although I took Tiger in my hiking backpack you could definitely bring a stroller if you opted for that route. Any kid about 4 years or older can easily do the whole thing on foot, so it’s really suited for the whole family. There are a ton of classic Instagram worthy photo opportunities and it’s a fantastic way to get in some fresh air. The drive to the start of the hike is about 10 minutes from the main Whistler village. Signage makes it pretty easy to get around.
I highly recommend this hike for families looking to do something outdoorsy and active, and for adult groups looking to get an easy outing in your itinerary.
